Blog tag

Okay, time for memery, courtesy of Caelestis (though I have completed it in a far less academic fashion than he did)! I'm not going to tag anyone, but feel free to repost this. It would be fun to see some others answer.

What were you doing 10 years ago?

I was a sixth grader in February 1996. Most likely I had just gotten, or was just about to get, braces on my teeth (though you wouldn't know it by looking at them now). My goal in life was to be president of the U.S.-- you can all laugh now. My favorite subject in school was science, and I was particularly enthralled with geology, having just learned about continental drift.

What were you doing 1 year ago?

A year ago today, I was elected president of LinG, the Harvard undergrad linguistics group. I also attended the first meeting of my spring Tuesday/Thursday classes. Around this time I decided on my thesis topic (I now rue the day) and also decided to write a paper on Akkadian orthography, which turned out to be far more fun and less painful than my thesis.

Five snacks you enjoy:

1. Strawberry jam-filled mochi poof thingos
2. Extra butter flavor Pop Secret popcorn (I'm very particular about popcorn)
3. Brie & crackers
4. Cookies of nearly any description, though I don't love chocolate chip
5. Bread, especially Ecce Panis (not only for the name!)

Five songs you know all the words to:

I know lots more than that! I guess some of the more remarkable ones are songs that go by very fast and which people therefore tend not to know, like Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees. I could go on, but that would be embarrassing.

Five bad habits:

1. Complete lack of will power to resist napping
2. Intellectual snobbery
3. Total inability to study!!!
4. Overload washing machine, such that entire 2nd floor shakes during spin cycle
5. General tendency towards dilettantency

Five things you enjoy doing:

2. Reading outside when it's warm and sunny
3. Going for coffee with friends
4. Playing games, of the video, card, computer, or board variety
5. Hearing or giving a good talk (combining two of Angelo's five)

Five things you would never wear again:

1. A big Stussy t-shirt with one of those little doohickeys bunching up one corner, lycra bike shorts, and a scrunchie (I hope the early 90s are dead for good!)
2. Footie pajamas
3. Slap-on bracelet
4. Crimped hair
5. Socks with ruffles

Five favorite toys:

1. Powerbook (total agreement on this one!)
2. Snape
3. Super Nintendo - still my favorite system of all time
4. Knitting accoutrements
5. TiVo!

Five things you have in common with your tagger:

1. We both like Japanese snacks
2. We both like Bartley's onion rings (okay, I'll get off the food thing now...)
3. We're both Mac users
4. We attended many of the same classes at the 2005 LSASI

I am titillated by your neologism, dilettantency. I also like the erudite plural, dilettanti.
