Global Flavor
Tonight on the Junk Food Blog, there was an announcement posted about a new "Latino Style" Lay's potato chip. The author wonders
Exactly what does a "Latino" taste like? Apparently, something like Hot Peppers Salsa, according to the bag.The usage didn't strike me as particularly odd--I read it as something like 'style a Latino might like'--but it did remind me of something I *do* find odd at a local restaurant. Punjabi Dhaba, the Inman Square Indian eatery, has three flavors of lassi: mango, coconut (I think? some fruit, in any case), and Punjabi. Uh... is that vegetarian-friendly?
I thought it was odd to see the word "Latino" used to described [sic] a flavor, as opposed to something like "Mexican style".

hahaha I had forgotten about the Punjabi lassi... my roommates and I laughed about it every time we went to the dhaba.
And now I miss the cheap, delicious Indian food... saag paneer, where art thou???
No no, this makes me cringe. I agree with the post's author that it's strange - it would make more sense to say "Latin-style," as that's what music, for example, that is produced largely by and for Latino people is called.
Is there really "Latin-style" food, though? Mexican food (which has several regional varieties itself) is different from Peruvian is different from Venezualan is different from Cuban, etc. Is there really that much commonality in the foods?
